Day in the life of a Pega business analyst

Find out what it's like to work as a Pega business analyst in the Australian Public Service.

We share an APS member's thoughts on what it is like to be a Pega business analyst.

What I do

I’m a Pega business analyst. My role involves working collaboratively with stakeholders to define their requirements and assist with workflow designs that will address the issues faced by our customers. The systems that I support help to enforce the country's various quarantine, customs, and immigration and finance laws.

Pega business analysts are required to help refine business processes by determining the pain points, offer solutions (existing or new proposals) and outline business impacts so that business stakeholders can make informed decisions. The ultimate goal of a Pega business analyst is to create value for the customer and business.

Day to day

Pega business analysts need to be thorough with their knowledge as it’s specifically related to the work they will be doing. In order to deliver on the desired business outcomes, it is important that we gather, validate and document the business requirements.

The business requirements help us to model business processes and identify opportunities for process improvement. Having access to information helps us to identify issues and risks that are present in the current business processes. Focusing on the identified issues and risks, we work to solve them by maximising the use of existing capabilities or proposing innovative solutions. We outline business impacts to the user which helps in determining the value of proposed solutions.

In the time that I have worked as a Pega business analyst, I have utilised procedural instructions, training materials, workflow/business process diagrams and drafting user stories to document proposals in consultation with the team.

To help me validate the proposed solution, I refer back to the procedural instructions, training materials and current application. This approach helps us to determine the value proposition and provide the right guidance to our customer and business.

I regularly engage with customers and work collaboratively in a team environment. The fast-paced evolving nature of the role keeps me engaged and interested to find better ways to solve problems faced by our customers.

Putting myself in the customers’ shoes

As a Pega business analyst, I enjoy the challenge of putting myself in the customers’ shoes. This perspective helps me come up with better ways of supporting a business process and  focuses my attention to ensure I know the existing system, the current procedural instructions, restrictions and potential challenges that may arise when trying to change things.

Picking up new skills

I enjoy the ongoing challenge with regards to training, user experience and an eye for the next opportunity for skills growth. The challenges that come with this role keep me engaged and motivated to learn new skills.

For example, as a pega business analyst I have an opportunity to up-skill myself in the system analyst and design roles.  These skills help me make better informed decisions and open up potential career paths for the future.

I pick up new skills with online training from Pega Academy, enablement sessions with senior business analysts, service analysts and mentors. Working on system development projects helps enable me to perform better in the role. The role also challenges you to utilise soft skills such as interpersonal skills, effective communication, problem-solving, team management, time management, teamwork, leadership, adaptability to name just a few, that are essential for success in the role."
