About the Data Profession

The Data Profession aims to raise the data capability of the APS workforce to ensure policy decisions are data-driven and evidence-based. The Data Profession unites specialists who use data to inform policy, improve service delivery and tackle complex challenges.

The Data Profession supports service-wide capability uplift by:

  • recruiting data graduates
  • developing and supporting the teaching of training courses for staff at all levels within the APS
  • defining data capabilities
  • supporting diversity and mobility of people in data roles
  • defining career pathways for staff who wish to pursue a data career in the APS.

As Head of the Data Profession, David:

  • provides advice and support to agencies on how to build strong data capabilities
  • leverages his broader understanding of best-practice to inform APS-wide capability uplift strategies
  • advises agencies on innovative ways to collect, share and use data responsibly to meet the needs of the day.

David uses his extensive experience both within and outside of the APS to shape the Data Profession strategy. He finds new and innovative ways to develop a workforce that is fit for the future.
