Transcript - What is the Data Profession? [upbeat music] Hi, my name is David Gruen. I'm the head of the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and also head of the APS Data Profession. In recent years, we've witnessed a huge lift in the amount and timeliness of data that can be brought to bear on public policy problems. From natural disasters to the pandemic response, data has guided the Australian Government and the community to make better informed and more effective decisions. With this growing availability of data comes a new challenge, keeping pace with demand. As we work with bigger, more connected data sources, there is a rising demand for skilled professionals who can make the most of the available data and use it responsibly. That's why the APS Data Profession was established. It aims to attract, develop, and retain the skills we need across the APS. What makes this profession special is that it's not just for data scientists or statisticians, it's for anyone in the APS who's curious about data, who wants to grow their skills, or who's eager to connect with peers, working on exciting projects that have a meaningful impact. The APS Data Profession has created a collaborative space, a community where learning and innovation thrive. Members gain access to created learning resources, events, videos, discussion forums, and more. It's an environment where capability grows and ideas are encouraged and tested. If you work in the APS, this profession is for you. I encourage you to be part of it. [upbeat music] End of transcript
